Meet the Makers

Meet the people who have created these wonderful pieces of furniture!

Tord Kjellstrom (S.I.D.)
The tsantai collection was designed by Tord Kjellstrom. Following a career as industrial designer and university lecturer in his native Sweden (including a spell with those clever people at Ikea), Tord is now living in Hexham where he has set up his design company and set up a glass studio. He has worked closely with our producers on the development of each product in the range.

Mokko International

Mokko are responsible for all products in the Semarang and Jepara ranges. They are based in a small town called Kendal, outside the city of Semarang, on the North coast of Java.

Working conditions are excellent in this small but modern factory, which specialises in production of wooden structures for modular homes. Skilled rattan weavers from the furniture-making centre of Jepara have joined the Mokko team in Kendal so that the products can be made in one location, under one roof.

Shown here are carpenters and weavers at work.

Tommy Fredriksson (General Manager of Mokko) has been an active player in the Fair Trade movement for over 25 years. He is also Swedish but has lived in Indonesia ever since he gave up his career as a semi-professional footballer on the island of Hawaii!! He is our Fair Trade champion on the North coast of Java, and manages all the local activities involved in the Semarang and Jepara ranges.

Inori
Inori (Indonesia Origin) are based in Jogyakarta. They are a Fair Trade agency established in June 2004 with the aim of facilitating micro-small producers to access markets through trading activities. “Based on fair trade principles, Inori works together with micro-small producers (and some upper scale producers) to achieve successful business.“

They manage and co-ordinate three producer groups involved in the production of the Jogya and Kartosuro ranges. Shown here are:

• Deddy Heriyanto (General Manager) and some of the Inori team
• Deddy and a member of the Different Abilities workshop in Jogyakarta who have produced the wooden shelves and table tops for these two ranges
• Textile weavers based in Pedan, Klaten District – a group employing 40+ people, mostly women
